The Road Sign Categories In Ireland

There are five main categories of road sign in Ireland: regulatory, warning, road works, informational and motorway. We’ve broken down each below.

Regulatory Signs

Regulatory signs will be displayed in either;

  • A white background with a red border and black letters/symbols/numbers.
  • A blue background with white letters/symbols/numbers.

As the name suggests, these signs must be followed, and failure to do so could see you punished. Regulatory signs are usually found on motorways and main roads, with them tending to be speed limit indicators and traffic control mechanisms. Another major regulatory sign that you must adhere to is the stop sign. Some less common regulatory signs include weight and height restrictions.

Warning Signs

These are in place to signal a danger or potential issue in front of you. They will usually be on a yellow background with a black symbol. Warning signs you will come across include school ahead, bend in the road ahead and even animals in the road (if you are in a rural area). Some less common warning signs that you could still come across include a riverbank, steep incline in the road and merging roads. When you see a warning sign, make sure you are ready for the hazard ahead so that you can deal with it in plenty of time.

Road Works Signs

Our roads need constant supervision and maintenance to serve the millions of drivers who use them every year. As a result of this, road works will take place, and signs must be in place to protect the workers. When you see a road works sign, bring the car to a safe speed and be aware of any potential hazards on the road. Some of the lights you might find include road works ahead, temporary lights and road narrows from the left.

Informational Signs

Although these signs don’t necessarily need to be followed, they can provide useful guidance if you are in an unfamiliar area. Informational signs tend to display directions to nearby areas and upcoming services and public facilities. Yes, many of us rely on GPS navigation systems, but informational signs can be useful in giving you that extra bit of reassurance that you are heading in the right direction. Informational signs can vary in colour, appearing in any of the following formats:

  • Green.
  • Blue.
  • White.
  • Brown.
